Ways you can Volunteer

Volunteers work in many different aspects of the organization. Here are some of the most popular

Volunteers come from all over the country. Many local residents of Kenton, Boone & Hamilton County's help the our organization in countless ways. Other volunteers drive, some over 100 miles, for a long weekend of work and fun. A few fly in from across the country to be here and participate in our operations several times each year. Volunteer crew members who come from afar can stay overnight at several nearby hotels who a offer discounts for NRHS members/volunteers.

What it takes to become a Volunteer

To become a volunteer with the National Railway Historical Society you should have a passion for rail preservation and a willingness to learn. Volunteers engage in various activities, including restoring vintage trains, maintaining records or equipment and participating in educational programs. A commitment to teamwork and safety is essential, as you'll be working alongside experienced members who share your enthusiasm for railway history. Whether you have prior or are new to preservation, your dedication will help preserve the legacy of railroads for future generations. The available programs include:

  • Steam Program In Partnership with American Steam Railroad AFT 250 Freedom Train

  • Diesel Restoration Program

  • Car Host Program

  • Archivist

  • Educational Outreach Programs (e.g. STEAM & Operation Life Savor, Community Education)

  • Museum Staff Members  

Be a part of archiving  images, artifacts, Sanborn maps, photos and genealogy records. A century's worth of history awaits you. 

Volunteer opportunities are available both on-site and remotely i archiving materials for the general public. All volunteers will receive training in terms of policies and procedures. The work produced by volunteers will eventually be published online on a public website frequently accessed by genealogists, family members, researchers, and rail enthusiasts. Current and ongoing projects include:

  • Digitization of Records and Photo

  • Transcription of Historic Documents

  • Research

  • Organization of Records

Safety Training Weekend for Volunteers

A great time to start your railroad operations volunteer experience is at one of required Safety Training Weekends.

Safety Training weekends are free to members, and membership starts at $30. This is a two-day intensive session with classroom and hands-on training.

It is a great learning experience, and the way to start your long-term relationship with the railroad as a train operations volunteer.
